Biological Allies in the Operatory: Adjuncts That Work With the Microbiome presented by Anne Rice

As dentistry evolves beyond mechanical intervention, adjunctive agents rooted in nutritional science, microbiology, and molecular therapeutics are reshaping how clinicians support oral and systemic health. This presentation explores a spectrum of evolving and evidence-based adjuncts—from hydroxyapatite and niacinamide to omega-3s, CoQ10, stannous fluoride, and hyaluronic acid—that enhance traditional protocols through targeted modulation of inflammation, biofilm dynamics, and host response.

Special attention will be given to microbiome-conscious therapies, including prebiotics, probiotics, and postbiotics, as well as bioactive compounds such as lantibiotics and rapamycin, which demonstrate potential to address persistent periodontal challenges and oxidative stress. Hyaluronic acid, with its well-documented roles in tissue repair, hydration, and anti-inflammatory action, will be reviewed for its clinical applications in periodontal therapy and post-surgical healing. The adjunctive potential of vitamins D, A, and E will also be examined for their role in enamel remineralization, immune resilience, and epithelial regeneration.

By bridging foundational biochemistry with practical operatory protocols, attendees will gain the tools to critically assess, integrate, and communicate the value of these adjuncts in improving outcomes for periodontal therapy, wound healing, and systemic wellness.

Course Objectives:
Identify emerging adjunctive agents—including hydroxyapatite, niacinamide, CoQ10, vitamins D, A, and E, and postbiotics—that support enamel remineralization, modulate inflammation, and promote oral microbial balance.

Evaluate the scientific rationale and clinical applications of innovative adjuncts such as lantibiotics, omega-3 fatty acids, rapamycin, and stannous fluoride in both preventive and therapeutic dental care.

Integrate microbiome-conscious, evidence-based adjuncts—such as prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, and vitamin-based modulators—into everyday clinical protocols to enhance periodontal healing, reduce inflammation, and support systemic wellness

THE 411 ON D4346: An Interactive Program on Oral Inflammation
Despite our best efforts, highly prevalent gingivitis cases continue to increase, unpacking key research linking gingival inflammation to increased risk in both chronic and acute local and systemic disease.

With every layer of research comes a renewed validation in the importance of inflammatory mitigation and thus calls upon the dental community to rise in meeting the increased demands for stringent gingivitis management protocols.

However, as gingivitis cases dramatically increase across the United States, so do the percentages of preventive D1110 procedural codes. As a result, the ‘old normal’ continues to thrive in the face of patients questioning treatment beyond the ‘free cleaning’, and dentistry has quickly learned that insurance denials were resiliently ‘virus-proof’ as third-party payor requests for delivering substandard levels of care continue to ‘plague’ dental practices across the United States.

Join periodontal hygienist Katrina Sanders as she delivers an interactive program discussing the 4-1-1 on current trends around addressing active gingivitis via the D4346 procedural code, as well as optimal ways to move away from excessive use of the D1110 in an effort to improve patient understanding, acceptance and ultimately inflammation-free health.

Course Objectives:

  1. Explore the prevalence and scope of oral inflammation in the 21st Century.

  2. Identify key indicators of reversible gingivitis and irreversible periodontitis.

  3. Curate transitional procedures and verbiage to move patients into advanced treatment modalities.

  4. Rehearse key verbiage in discussing inflammation, infection and the oral-systemic link.

  5. Discuss critical procedural components necessary for integrating the D4346 code successfully.
