Thinking outside the Box: Clinical Considerations Based on Critical Thinking presented by Trisha O’Hehir
Critical thinking is an essential skill for both professional practice and everyday decision-making. In clinical settings, it bridges the gap between scientific evidence, personal experience, and patient preferences. This course, led by Trisha, explores the foundational elements of critical thinking—examining the who, what, when, where, why, and how of this vital skill. Participants will learn how critical thinking enhances clinical practices, including periodontal instrumentation, daily oral hygiene decisions, and evaluating options like xylitol versus fluoride. Additionally, the course addresses how values and beliefs can evolve with new information. The course also highlights the growing recognition of nasal breathing's importance for overall health and its role in clinical recommendations. Drawing on over five decades of experience in the dental hygiene profession, Trisha provides historical insights and practical examples of how critical thinking has driven positive change in the field.
Learning Objectives:
Define critical thinking and explain its importance in clinical and everyday decision-making.
Apply critical thinking to evaluate scientific evidence, clinical experience, and patient preferences in treatment planning.
Analyze case studies to demonstrate critical thinking in areas such as periodontal instrumentation and oral hygiene practices.
Compare the benefits and limitations of preventive strategies, such as xylitol and fluoride, using critical thinking.
Identify how personal values and beliefs influence decision-making and adapt these perspectives when presented with new evidence.
Reflect on the evolution of critical thinking within the dental hygiene profession and its impact on current practices.
Understand the value of nasal breathing for overall health and incorporate it into patient education and treatment planning.

Course Description: This presentation delves into the intricate connections between nutritional deficiencies, facial and oral health, and overall well-being. It aims to recognize the visible signs of nutritional deficiencies that manifest on the face and within the oral cavity, providing crucial insights for early diagnosis and intervention. The role of optimal nutrition in enhancing overall health is emphasized, highlighting its profound influence on physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Moreover, the presentation evaluates dental patients for potential airway problems, identifying conditions that might impact their lifespan and cognitive abilities. The research also comprehends the significant impact of systemic health issues on the skin and oral health, advocating for a holistic approach to patient care. By intertwining these aspects, the presentation aims to promote comprehensive health strategies that address the root causes of deficiencies and systemic problems, ultimately enhancing patient outcomes and quality of life.
Learning Objectives:
Recognize nutritional deficiencies observable on the face and within the oral cavity
Recall the role of optimal nutrition in influencing overall well-being.
Evaluate the dental patient for potential airway problems that might impact their lifespan and IQ
Comprehend the impact of systemic problems on the skin and oral health.

THE 411 ON D4346: An Interactive Program on Oral Inflammation
Despite our best efforts, highly prevalent gingivitis cases continue to increase, unpacking key research linking gingival inflammation to increased risk in both chronic and acute local and systemic disease.
With every layer of research comes a renewed validation in the importance of inflammatory mitigation and thus calls upon the dental community to rise in meeting the increased demands for stringent gingivitis management protocols.
However, as gingivitis cases dramatically increase across the United States, so do the percentages of preventive D1110 procedural codes. As a result, the ‘old normal’ continues to thrive in the face of patients questioning treatment beyond the ‘free cleaning’, and dentistry has quickly learned that insurance denials were resiliently ‘virus-proof’ as third-party payor requests for delivering substandard levels of care continue to ‘plague’ dental practices across the United States.
Join periodontal hygienist Katrina Sanders as she delivers an interactive program discussing the 4-1-1 on current trends around addressing active gingivitis via the D4346 procedural code, as well as optimal ways to move away from excessive use of the D1110 in an effort to improve patient understanding, acceptance and ultimately inflammation-free health.
Course Objectives:
Explore the prevalence and scope of oral inflammation in the 21stCentury.
Identify key indicators of reversible gingivitis and irreversible periodontitis.
Curate transitional procedures and verbiage to move patients into advanced treatment modalities.
Rehearse key verbiage in discussing inflammation, infection and the oral-systemic link.
Discuss critical procedural components necessary for integrating the D4346 code successfully.
